Test Scenarios
Below are some key test scenarios to check the LTI integration between your LMS and PebblePad works as it should.
These work the same way for Canvas, Moodle, Brightspace and Blackboard; however, where a step is different for your LMS, the LMS notes under that scenario explain what to do.
Before you start
- Test in your test instance (which links through to the PebblePad test server) first. Move to the live site only once everything passes. PebblePad recommends setting the integration up twice: once on test, then again on live.
- Set up a test course in your LMS with the PebblePad link already added. Ideally use a sandbox course rather than a real one.
- Have three test accounts ready: one teacher and two students, added to your LMS course with the appropriate roles. Use a private or incognito browser window for each person so the logins don't get mixed up, or if your browser has this feature, containers can be useful for this, too.
- Keep a simple log. For each step, write down pass or fail, add a screenshot if something looks wrong, and note the date and time. The time helps support find the problem.
LMS notes
- Canvas: the PebblePad link can be the PebblePad item in the course navigation menu, or a PebblePad assignment.
- Moodle, Brightspace and Blackboard: the PebblePad link is a PebblePad assignment link in the course content. Ask the teacher to create one before Scenario 1 (see the guides in Scenario 4). The first time the teacher clicks it, the ATLAS wizard opens: choose Active mode and click Finish to set up the linked workspace.
Scenario 1: A student opens PebblePad from the LMS
Focus: students get into PebblePad without a second login and land in the right place.
- Log into your LMS as Student 1.
- Open the test course and click the PebblePad link.
- PebblePad should open without asking for a password
- Student lands in Pebble+, their personal space.
- Click on the account icon in the top right and check that the account full name and username are correct.
- Go to 'Assets' and upload a file e.g. a simple image file
- Log out, then repeat the launch. The student should arrive in the same account, not a new duplicate one, and see the uploaded file in their Assets view.
LMS notes
- Moodle and Blackboard: the integration passes the LMS username across, so the PebblePad username should match the student’s Moodle or Blackboard username.
- Brightspace: the PebblePad username should match the student’s Brightspace username, not their Org Defined ID.
- All: PebblePad may open in a new tab or window, depending on how the link was set up. This is expected.
Scenario 2: A teacher opens PebblePad from the LMS
Focus: teachers are recognised as teachers.
- Log into your LMS as the teacher.
- Open the same course and click the PebblePad link.
- Teacher should be directed to the ATLAS workspacelinked to this course, not in Pebble+. They should be able to see the workspace's management options.
- Atlas is the administrative area, mainly for staff, denoted by the blue globe icon.
- Pebble+ is the student area, generally speaking, denoted by the icon of a green human in the shape of a plus symbol.
Scenario 3: Class lists match between the LMS and PebblePad
Focus: people in the LMS course appear in the PebblePad workspace with the right access.
- As the teacher, open the ATLAS workspace and look at the list of members.
- Check that both test students and the teacher are listed, each with the right role assigned, as mapped from your LMS to their nearest equivalent in PebblePad.
- In your LMS, add a new test student to the course.
- Access PebblePad from your LMS as that student and see if they can access it
- Extra: Switch to teacher account and check that the student has the correct role in ATLAS.
Extension test - role switching
- Change a user's role in your LMS, for example from student to a teaching assistant role (see LMS notes), then relaunch.
- Check whether their access in PebblePad changes to match.
- Accessing PebblePad from your LMS with the user who has changed roles is the best way to expedite any sync between platforms for this test.
LMS notes
- Canvas: switch the user from Student to TA.
- Moodle: switch the user from Student to Non-editing teacher.
- Brightspace: role names are set by each institution, so use your local teaching assistant (or similar) role.
- Blackboard: switch the user from Student to Teaching Assistant.
Scenario 4: The assignment link opens the correct PebblePad resource
Focus: a PebblePad assignment link in your LMS takes students straight to the right resource.
- As the teacher, make a PebblePad assignment in your LMS course and select a workbook or template from PebblePad.
- See the Help Hub guide for your LMS in the LMS notes below.
- Make sure it is an assignment link, not a resource link. A resource link doesn't connect the course to an ATLAS workspace, so enrolment and grade sync won't be tested.
- As Student 1, click the assignment link in your LMS.
- This should open the correct item in PebblePad directly, no searching needed.
- Make some changes to the PebblePad and save and/or submit it (depending on settings in PebblePad - turning auto-submit on is likely fastest for testing purposes as saving then becomes submission)
- Check Atlas as the teacher and the student's submission should be there for marking.
LMS notes
- Canvas: Assignments > +Assignment, set Submission type to External tool, then find and select PebblePad ATLAS LTI 1.3. Guide: Create a PebblePad assignment in Canvas
- Moodle: turn on Edit mode, then Add an activity or resource > External tool, and choose PebblePad under Preconfigured tool. Guide: Create a PebblePad assignment in Moodle
- Brightspace: Content > Existing Activities > External Learning Tools, then choose PebblePad assignment. Guide: Create a PebblePad assignment in Brightspace
- Blackboard: + menu > Content Market, then the + beside PebblePad and ATLAS via LTI 1.3 (not the tile). Edit it, make it visible to students and tick the option to create a gradebook entry. Guide: Create a PebblePad assignment in Blackboard
- All: assignment dates set in the LMS don't sync to the ATLAS workspace, so set any dates in PebblePad.
Scenario 5: Grades write back to the LMS
Focus: marks given in PebblePad appear in the LMS gradebook.
- As the teacher, open Student 1's submission in ATLAS.
- Give it a grade and release it.
- In your LMS, open the course gradebook.
- Student 1's grade should appear against the right assignment column and match the ATLAS grade.
Extension tests:
- Change the grade in ATLAS and check that your LMS updates.
- Check that Student 2, who hasn't been graded, still shows blank in your LMS.
- Log in as Student 1 and check they can see their grade in your LMS.
LMS notes
- Canvas: the grade appears in the course Grades area.
- Moodle: the grade appears in the Grader report. It also needs releasing in the Grader report before the student can see it in Moodle.
- Brightspace: the grade appears in the Grade Centre column for the assignment. It also needs releasing there before the student can see it in Brightspace.
- Blackboard: the grade appears in the Grade Centre column for the assignment. It also needs releasing there before the student can see it in Blackboard.
Scenario 6: Things that should not be possible
- A student tries to reach the teacher's workspace view. They should not be able to see management tools or other students' work.
- A user who isn't enrolled in the course in your LMS shouldn't be able to get into that workspace.
- Two different courses each have a PebblePad link. Each link should open its own workspace, and the two shouldn't mix.
If something fails
Note the scenario, the account used, the time, and a screenshot, then send it to your PebblePad Implementation Engineer with any relevant details.
If single sign-on works but class lists or grades don't come through, say so. Those use the separate API connection (the service account) set up during installation, so it helps narrow down the cause.
