A deadline extension can be given to one or more learners to authorise and extend the time they have to make a new submission, or modify work already submitted.

Late versus extended

A late submission is typically an unauthorised extension. The learner has failed to complete the assignment on time, but you still wish to see their work and allow it to be submitted. The submission will be indicated as late and usually its grade will be capped.

An extended submission is typically an authorised extension. The learner has formally requested additional time to complete an assignment, and as the assessor, you have approved this request due to permitted circumstances. The submission will not be indicated as late, and its grade will not be capped.

If a learner submits during a late period:

• without an extension, the submission is marked as late.
• with an extension, the submission is not marked as late. 

Allowed action

The extension for a learner will add additional days to the existing assignment deadline to allow them to take one of the following actions:

Make a new submission

If the learner has not yet submitted anything to the assignment, giving an extension will:

• reopen the assignment inbox 
• allow for submission until the extension deadline is reached.

Update an existing submission

If a learner has submitted to an assignment already, and they are allowed to modify their work, giving an extension will:

• re-synchronise the learner's asset with the workspace submission
• allow learner modifications up until the extension deadline is reached.
• stop modifications when the extension deadline is passed.

Give an extension

An extension is only required when an assignment has a deadline date already set. It can be applied to one or more learners in a workspace.

To permit:

1. From the workspace, click the Management tab
2. If not already, go to Assignments in the sub menu
3. Click the Manage extension button for the assignment
   
4. Click Add new extension
5. Type the number of days to extend the current deadline
6. Tick one or more learners who will receive this extension
7. Click Save

A workspace manager must grant an Assessor the permission to manage assignments in order to give an extension.
